System Manager

Position Description

The System Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing the system operations of the enterprise through the management of the organization’s system engineers and analysts. The system engineering manager provides guidance when it comes to analyzing and evaluating system functionality, and managing operation systems such as servers, server appliances, data centers, and associated hardware. The System Engineering Manager directs the planning and implementation of enterprise IT system initiatives and facilitates the daily maintenance of the IT system operation. This individual is also responsible for ensuring all systems adhere to defined policies and standards. The System Engineering Manager is expected to interface with peers in the Network, Operations, and Security departments, as well as with the leaders of the business units, to ensure the corporate operations are maintained through collaborative co-operation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in the design and on-going support of corporate systems and data centers.
  • Act as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) on systems, operations and best practices from both a server and data center perspective.
  • Oversee the deployment, integration and initial configuration of all new system solutions and of any enhancements to existing solutions in accordance with standard best operating procedures generically and the enterprise’s standards documents specifically.
  • Ensure the enforcement of enterprise security standards with respect to operations and systems.
  • Engage in ongoing communications with peers in the Network and Security groups as well as the various business groups to ensure enterprise wide understanding of system goals, to solicit feedback and to foster co-operation.
  • Work closely within the department on corporate technology development to fully optimize the communication of information and allow for information processing.
  • Manage the administration of all computer systems and their corresponding or associated software, including server, racks, storage, appliance and all other associated systems and hardware in the data centers.
  • Creatively and independently provide resolution to IT system problems in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the IT system industry including awareness of new or revised solutions, improved processes and the development of new technologies for improved performance.
  • Understand all contracts related to system technologies and when they expire and when to start renewal process or provide alternative solution.
  • Where necessary, supervise recruitment, development, retention, and organization of system staff in accordance with corporate budgetary objectives and personnel policies.
  • Develop metrics for the department and opportunities for improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and/or 7 years equivalent work experience.
  • Individuals must have at least 4+ years experience in system administration and engineering in a large or enterprise IT environment, and at least 6+ years experience in Information Technology.
  • High level of personal integrity, as well as the ability to show an appropriate level of judgment and maturity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills for leadership, technical and business audiences
  • Poise and ability to act calmly and competently in high-pressure, high-stress situations.
  • Must be a critical thinker, with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated and disciplined, with excellent time management skills
  • Working technical knowledge of systems including server, racks, storage, appliance and monitoring tools.
  • Strong understanding of server, storage, client/server and database systems.
  • Proven experience in planning, organizing, and developing IT system technologies.
  • Excellent understanding of project management principles.
  • Strong consideration given for system related certifications, specifically with one or more of the following certifications:
  • CSE
  • MCSA
  • MCSD
  • ITIL
  • CompTIA
  • ISACA or Major Brand Server Certifications such as HP, EMC, Dell, Cisco, IBM, etc.
